In 2014 when this moon rock first arrived at the Naranjo Museum of Natural History in Lufkin, Texas everyone was amazed. We get the opportunity to gaze at the 4 billion-year-old rock anytime we want while visiting the museum.

This chunk of the moon is on permanent loan from NASA to the museum. It has been on display at the Naranjo Museum of Natural History every day since.

All moon rocks are rare, as only a select few were brought back from the Apollo missions. What makes it so special is that this is the largest moon rock sample from NASA for display.

Biggest Moon Rock On Display Is In Lufkin, Texas

The moon rock was acquired in 1971 on the eighth crewed mission in the Apollo program, which was only the third to land on the lunar surface. According to Wikipedia, Commander Alan Shepard, Command Module Pilot Stuart Roosa, and Lunar Module Pilot Edgar Mitchell went on the trip.

Once there they collected almost 100 lbs of moon rocks to bring back for study. This was also the mission where Shepard hit two golf balls on the moon.

Shepard still has the designation of the oldest person to ever walk on the moon. He was 47 at the time of the mission.
