Just think of every bad thing that happens in town that ends up on the news or in the paper. Now imagine that is happening in real-time, but you are involved. You are miles away with your only contribution to the situation being your voice.
This week is the time that we reflect on how much worse those times would be without someone to call and send help. First responders in real-time are manning phones and coordinating police, fire, and EMS, all while providing a calming voice during the worst moment in your life.
National Public Safety Telecommunications Week (NPSTW) is a week to recognize those individuals and all they do for our community. Though their names don't make it on the news, they save the day 24/7 in Nacogdoches, Texas.

You won't recognize these heroes when you see them out in town. They aren't wearing a badge or a uniform to pin it on.
They are just as much a lifeline to the officers that they send to you, as they are to us in the public when we call. I am thankful for all they do for us as a community.
Nacogdoches PD recently posted these photos on their Facebook page, so we could all put a face with the voices that do so much good in our town.
According to cisa.gov NPSTW is held every year during the second week of April to spend time reflecting on all these telecommunications do for their communities. It was first started in 1981 in California.
It became official in 1994 when President Bill Clinton signed Presidential Proclamation 6667.
