A Heartbreaking Loss

You hear and see that phrase many times when it comes to sports. A team or individual came so close to pulling out a victory but in the end, they couldn't get the win.

The Stephen F. Austin State Athletics Department suffered a recent loss that is heartbreaking.  In fact, there are really no words that can encompass this loss.

The SFA community is mourning the loss of two SFA student-athletes. Micah McAfoose and Graylan Spring passed away this past Friday and Saturday, respectively, due to injuries suffered in a two-vehicle collision on Highway 59 in Corrigan, Texas.

McAfoose was previously a member of the SFA baseball team. Spring was a football player for the Lumberjacks.

Statements issued by SFA

Lumberjack Head Baseball Coach Johnny Cardenas

"Micah was a very special person who always had a smile on his face.  He was one of the most fun-loving kids we have ever had in our program.  He will be missed by our players and staff."

SFA Head Football Coach Colby Carthel

"Our hearts are broken at the loss of Graylan, and our prayers go out to the amazing Spring family.  What a tremendous loss for those of us fortunate to know Graylan.  He was a true champion, both on and off the field, and his legacy will live on forever within the Lumberjack football program."

The SFA Flag at the main entrance of the University will be flown at half-staff on Monday to honor McAfoose, and on Wednesday to honor Spring. A vigil will be held at Homer Bryce Stadium Monday, January 23 at 7:30 p.m. The event is open to the community.
