Two-Way Stop in Shelby County Soon to Be a Four-Way Stop
The Texas Department of Transportation advises motorists in Shelby County to be cautious of road work being done on Highway 7, east of Center. Construction crews have started work to install a new four-way stop on State Highway 7 at Loop 500.
The work will include the installation of new stop signs and advanced flashing beacons in Center. This new addition to the intersection was considered necessary after a traffic study was completed and it was determined that safety would be enhanced with the addition of a four-way stop. The location is currently a two-way stop with traffic on eastbound and westbound Highway 7 having the right of way.
The project is expected to be completed in several weeks, weather permitting. Enforcement of the new stop signs will begin once work is completed. Loop 500 forms a semi-circle around Center.
Allstate Signal and Construction, based in Cypress Texas, is serving as the contractor for the $899,492.37 construction project that Texas Transportation Commissioners approved in August 2022.
Motorists should be aware of workers and equipment at the site. Reduce speed and obey all traffic control as the new stop signs are placed. Keep in mind that traffic fines can double in work zones.
Other active work zones in Shelby County include road work on Highway 7 several miles west of Center. Work is also being done on a long stretch of Highway 96 south of Center.
